Sock-wrapped pipe: what vendor pages omit
Written 15 Jul 2026. Every vendor page shows the same picture: perforated pipe in its filter sock, laid in clean rock, trench open, sunlight flattering. None of them show year five. The sock is a filter, and a filter works by filling with what it filters. Buried where you cannot reach it, it clogs in place — and the page never mentions the dig-out.

Where the sock earns its keep
In genuinely sandy, silty soils, the sock buys years — the soil is fine enough to clog the rock envelope itself. In clay, the sock buys little: clay migrates slowly, and the real threat is the grade and the outlet, not particle intrusion. The desk's position: the sock is a legitimate tool, sold as a religion. The rock envelope and a cleanout you can actually reach decide the drain's life; the sock decides only the timing of the funeral.
The disagreement sentence
A product category whose entire marketing shows installation and never excavation is telling you its failure mode without saying the word.
